Review: WEB OF LIES

Web Of Lies by Jennifer Estep
Book 2 of the Elemental Assassin series
Read by Lauren Fortgang
Genre: urban fantasy
Format: paperback & audiobook

About Web Of Lies:
"Curiosity is definitely going to get me dead one of these days. Probably real soon. I'm Gin Blanco. You might know me as the Spider, the most feared assassin in the South. I'm retired now, but trouble still has a way of finding me. Like the other day, when two punks tried to rob my popular barbecue joint, the Pork Pit. Then there was the barrage of gunfire on the restaurant. Only, for once, those kill shots weren't aimed at me. They were meant for Violet Fox.

"Ever since I agreed to help Violet and her grandfather protect their property from an evil coalmining tycoon, Im beginning to wonder if Im really retired. So is Detective Donovan Caine. The only honest cop in Ashland is having a real hard time reconciling his attraction to me with his Boy Scout mentality. And I can barely keep my hands off his sexy body. What can I say? I'm a Stone elemental with a little Ice magic thrown in, but my heart isn't made of solid rock. Luckily, Gin Blanco always gets her man...dead or alive."

Review:
Like I said in Book 1 that maybe my crush on Agent Booth is more insinuating than I thought because I keep seeing him in different places and now I see David Boreanaz as Detective Donovan Caine! Boreanaz does fit the image of Caine like a glove! Then the story broke my heart! I'm not going to tell you what that is because that would be spoilery! But I hope that it works out well in succeeding books!! And this is the main reason why this book garnered no more than a rating of 3 out of 5 for the ending.

I did know from Book 1 that Gin tends to be stupid and made rookie mistake after rookie mistake for a supposedly accomplished and successful assassin. But I was kinda hoping that this inconsistent character deveploment would not persist through out the series because I really want to like this series! Even though I find this really annoying I am going to ignore it for now and hope like hell that this inconsistent character development flaw would go away in subsequent books. *fingers crossed* Anyway, this annoying aspect of the book is the main reason which brought this book's rating down. However it could not completely overshadow the wonderful world building and story telling quality that this book has! And the main reason why I would still read on with this series despite it's annoynaces!

Empirical Evaluation:
Story telling quality = 4
Character development = 1.5
Story itself = 3.5
Ending = 3
World building = 4.5
Cover art = 4
Pace = (12 hrs and 17 mins listening time)
Plot = 4
Narrator = 4

Overall Rating: 3.5 out of 5 cherries
