THE IMPORT

The Import by J.T. Baier
Book 1 in the Matthew Riker series
Narrated by Jay Snyder
Genre: crime fiction
Format: ebook & audiobookAudiobook

About The Import:
Some skills you never lose. Killing is one of them.

Matthew Riker keeps to himself, doesn't cause trouble, and never talks about his past.

But after a chance encounter with a woman and a small child on the run, Riker will have to make a choice: use his hard-won skills to protect two innocent victims, or stay in the safety of his quiet life.

What follows is an adrenaline-soaked thrill ride that will take Riker on a cross-country chase, through the seedy underbelly of a New York criminal empire, and into the darkest places of the human heart.

My Thoughts:
Our hero, Matthew Riker, is MacGyver, Rambo, and Sarah Connor rolled into one. The book is action-packed from the get-go until the end.

Some of the fight scenes though, did not seem plausible. But, me being an urban fantasy fan and not really of crime fiction, I am quite tolerant with impossible fight scenes. Having said that, I still wished that the fight scenes are done in a more believable way.

For a crime fiction, the plot was quite straight forward. Crime organisation kidnaps little girl. Riker rescues girl. Lots of violence all the way and that's it.

I didn't like it that the author placed the end of the story at the start as a prologue. I understand that it is a good selling technique but it does not make for a good reading. It kinda ruins the plot. Then you would know that this bit of the story would definitely happen.

I like the way Jay Snyder reads and his deep baritone of a voice suits our main protagonist's character.

GRIMM UP NORTH

Grimm Up North by David J. Gatward
Book 1 in the DCI Harry Grimm series
Narrated by Aubrey Parsons
Genre: crime fiction
Format: ebook & audiobookAudiobook

Welcome to Wensleydale, where the cheese is famous, the scenery beautiful, and the locals have murder on their minds …

Detective Chief Inspector Harry Grimm is forced to take leave from Bristol’s Major Investigations Team when his boss, tired of Harry chasing the ghost of his murderous father, sends him north on secondment.

Used to city life and high stress, Harry fears his life will now be spent handing out speeding tickets, finding lost sheep, and directing tourists. But when a local teenager runs away, Harry finds himself pulled into an investigation much worse than anyone could have ever expected.

The nicer the place, the darker the secrets. Wensleydale is beautiful, everyone is friendly and welcoming, and people just don’t get murdered ... do they?

A classic fish-out-of-water crime mystery set in the stunning and evocative scenery of Wensleydale in North Yorkshire.

My Thoughts:
I love dour and forbidding heroes in crime fighting stories! Also love the humour that this author peppers the story with!

I reckon that the reason DSI Firbank sent Harry up north is not because of the photograph but because of the condition his prisoners came in with. British police just frown on battered prisoners in your custody.

Hopefully, the author will reveal where Richard Askew got his source from in subsequent books in the series. Who is the leak?

There is an element of "stupid" here which I am wilfully ignoring for the reading enjoyment that I got out of this book. Hopefully this will not repeat in subsequent books.

Aubrey Parsons did a very good job indeed in narrating this book. Not only did he made the story come to life, but, he also drove home the humour in it! I also liked the way he gave our hero the gruff and gravely voice. It fits the character to the T!

THE MIDNIGHT MAN

The Midnight Man by Caroline Mitchell
Book 1 in the Slayton Thrillers
Narrated by Elliot Fitzpatrick and Emma Gregory
Genre: crime fiction
Format: ebook & audiobookAudiobook

If you open your door to the Midnight Man, hide with a candle wherever you can. Try not to scream as he draws near, because one of you won't be leaving here...

On Halloween night in Slayton, five girls go to Blackhall Manor to play the Midnight Game. They write their names on a piece of paper and prick their fingers to soak it in blood. At exactly midnight they knock on the door twenty-two times — they have invited the Midnight Man in.

It was supposed to be a game, but only four girls come home.

Detective Sarah Noble has just returned to the force, and no one knows more about Blackhall Manor than her. It's a case that will take Sarah back to everything she's been running from, and shake her to the core.

Will she be ready to meet the Midnight Man?

My Thoughts:
I am glad that I stumbled into this author because this book is a very good read!

This is not just crime fiction, but also with suggestive paranormal elements in it. My kind of read!

I am not really a crime fiction fan. I am more of an urban fantasy reader. Now, the urban fantasy genre is plagued by plotlessness, so, I am used to that. So much so that a little plot impresses me already. I was very surprised with the plot twist in this book!

DC Sarah Noble
I've been reading too many similar crime fiction books because I keep getting our protagonist, DC Sarah Noble, confused with DC Morgan Brookes in One Left Alive by Helen Phifer. I have to keep untangling the details in my head... was it DC Morgan Brookes who owned that big chunk of land with that big, haunted manor? Or was it DC Sarah Noble who was married to her former DI who is already dead, but she keeps talking to? The answer to both questions by the way, is no to the first one and yes to the second one.

This is my first Elliot Fitzpatrick and Emma Gregory listen and I would buy audiobooks by them again. The narrators are good at bringing the characters come to life!
