FUSED IN FIRE

Fused In Fire by K. F. Breene
Book 3 of the Fire & Ice Trilogy
Read by Nicole Pole
Genre: urban fantasy
Format: ebook & audiobookAudiobook

About Fused In Fire:
The gripping conclusion of the bestselling Fire and Ice Trilogy!

I'd thought the threat from Seattle was finished. That we showed up in time and took care of business.

I hate being wrong. It really ruins my day.

When Roger, the alpha of the North American pack, shows up at my door with the news that a demon has made it to the Underworld with knowledge of me, some hard decisions have to be made.

Do I stay above ground, with all my magical friends, and wait for the battle to come to me? Or do I seek the demon out, and pluck the threat out by the root?

I don’t want my friends to die on my behalf. I could never live with myself. But if I venture into the Underworld, it’ll be the most perilous journey of my life.

This time, it isn’t just my life hanging in the balance, it is my eternity.

My Thoughts:
Being the third instalment in a trilogy, this book did conclude the story arc of the series. However, it was pretty lame. That "gripping conclusion" description in the synopsis is not true. Maybe I was expecting too much, maybe it was the book and just didn't cut it. Whatever the reason this book disappointed me a little. It doesn't mean it isn't a good book because it is. Just not as good as I expected it to be. The plot is still the same kind of non-existent. The world building is also the same, as beautiful as ever. And I am now a firm fan of the narrator. What wasn't a plus was the heroine blundering from one fight into another and saved by sheer dumb luck. **sigh**

Empirical Evaluation:
Story telling quality = 4.5
Character development = 4.5
Story itself = 3
Writing Style = 4
Ending = 4
World building = 5
Cover art = 4.5
Pace = 4
Plot = 2
Narration = 5

Overall Rating: 3.5 out of 5 cherries

RAISED IN FIRE

Raised In Fire by K. F. Breene
Book 2 of the Fire & Ice Trilogy
Read by Nicole Pole
Genre: urban fantasy
Format: ebook & audiobookAudiobook

About Raised In Fire:
It is a common truth in my life that when it rains, it pours.

The killings that once plagued New Orleans are cropping up again in Seattle. The local office is stumped. I’m called out to lend a fresh set of eyes, and my unique magical touch.

It’s only when I get there that I realize the Seattle office isn’t stumped at all.

They’re being silenced by the Mages’ Guild, a corrupt magical institution that doesn't want word to get out of what is plaguing the city. Worse, news of my magic might’ve slipped down to the underworld, hitting the ears of some extremely powerful demons.

What I thought was a routine murder investigation turns into a fight for my life. With the help of Darius, my stalker elder vampire, and my dual-mage side kicks, I somehow have to dodge the Guild in order to stop one of the most powerful demons I’ve ever encountered. If I don’t? It’ll escape back down below with proof of what I really am.

My life hangs in the balance, and this time, I can't see a way out.

My Thoughts:
This time this book went quicker than Born In Fire. However, for some reason, Roger's visit felt out of line. Logically, he can do what he did. But it felt kinda jarring and it doesn't add up somehow. The plot though is still the same straight-forward-ish. No twists, no surprises. Having said that, it is the journey that made it interesting, not the end itself. The ending, although it closed the story line while continuing on the series' story arc, was kind of anticlimactic. It wasn't a bang. The anticipation build-up in the book did not match the ending. However, I had the next book by then so I wasn't too disappointed.

My Thoughts:
A grand start to a new-to-me series!

This is the first K. F. Breene book that I have read and am quickly becoming a fan. I thought that the special girl and vampire routine is old and jaded. It's been used around the block ones too many times. It's cliché. However, this author managed to make it interesting never-the-less, despite my scoffing. So of course I bought the books of the rest of the series already. I'm a little cautious though because I do not want to keep my hopes high only to be dashed by the end of the trilogy so much like The Kingmaker Chronicles. Now that one, is a real downer!

This is also the first Nicole Pole audiobook that I have listened to, and I have to say, she reads amazingly! Just the right amount of derision, sass, and intonation as the book calls for it. Kudos to the narrator! But for some reason though, I needed breaks from the book from time to time. This lead to the pace of the book slowing down despite the great world building. However, it also makes me look forward to reading further after the break. It adds an 'anticipatory pleasure' to the reading. And that gotta be a plus, right?
