Blog Tour: INSIDE PHOENIX

What is great about this book?
HA! A tough question to ask any author about her book baby.

I read all kinds of books, and there are many shifter books out there, werewolves, lions, and bears; we’ve all seen them. Shifter books can be a fun read, and I thought I could write a superior one. Now there is nothing wrong with steamy romance, but I always want an exciting plot to accompany it. So, I wrote a book that is more than boy meets girl equals instant lust. There is plenty of lust, but there is also conflict and a mystery. The characters are well developed and they aren’t perfect. They are likeable but flawed and damaged as are all real people. The reader discovers their failings, their strengths, and their motivations. The heated attraction builds as a trusting relationship develops. Meanwhile, the mystery and threat grow as well.

Shifter mythology has been around forever. From Native American shapeshifters to ancient Greek mythology, people have found the concept of changing physical forms fascinating. The concept of changing into an animal tugs at our imagination and pushes our boundaries in ways we would like to accept. This book explains where shape shifters originated and how their powers came to be.

Additionally, these memorable characters come from fantastically affluent backgrounds that most of us enjoy reading about but don’t experience. High fashion models and NFL stars aren’t our usual neighbors, but they make for a diverting read. Phoenix is fluent in smartassery and unimpressed by this football player who wants her. Ian has never met a woman who wasn’t interested in his fame and body, but in Phoenix he has met his counterpart. The problem is, he has to keep her alive long enough to make her his.

Romance, mystery, and a killer on the loose make this a great book you will want to read.

About Roni O’Connell:
Roni O’Connell is the author of Inside Phoenix, a sexy shifter romance/thriller for adults, Chameleon’s Spell, a dystopian paranormal romance/thriller, Float, the first paranormal thriller in the YA series Chronicles of D.E.A.D High, and 3rd Degree Secrets, the second paranormal thriller in the series.

Addicted to books from infancy, Roni says, “I love books that explore fantasy worlds and the paranormal—books that push the edges of my imagination. As a child, I spent many of my best hours immersed in books and that passion morphed into writing them. I taught English literature for many years and found some of my students felt underrepresented in the books they read. That is why Float has a Hispanic heroine.

“I live with my husband and three dogs high in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. A California native, I find inspiration in the forest, wildlife, and lakes around my home. When I’m not writing, I can usually be found out on my kayak or swimming in mountain lakes. I love good wine and great coffee, and people with my similar wicked sense of humor. I love animals, and I’ve become known locally as the Animal Whisperer as I can get birds to land in my hands and foxes and deer come to me to be petted.”

SWEET MUSE Guest Post & Giveaway

The Story Behind Sweet Muse
A lot of people ask if Sweet Muse is an autobiography and if I’m Anna Starr. What I can say is that Sweet Muse might have been inspired by experiences I’ve had and people I’ve met and that Anna and I do share some personality traits. But it is purely a work of fiction.

I can also say that when The Devil Wears Prada was published, I was working at one of the world’s biggest fashion magazines, and I had the same idea to use my wild magazine stories as a backdrop for a novel. A decade later, I was still thinking about writing that novel, setting it in the late nineties—the last hurrah of publishing, before the web changed content and magazine editors still had cache and control over the industries they covered.

At the same time, I’ve always loved romance novels. I adore a happily ever after and would tear through everything from historical to contemporary. I dreamed of becoming a romance novelist while editing the dating advice column. The advice we offered was so spunky and all about female empowerment, and I thought it would be fun to reinvent the category, taking a page from that approach.

When 50 Shades of Grey came out and became a phenomenon, I had an a-ha and decided to put the two ideas together—a big, yummy romance with NYC magazine publishing as the setting. I set Sweet Muse in a celebrity magazine. I worked at some of the biggest celebrity magazines in the country, and the tabloid news business is such a rich place of extremes. The personalities are intense and sometimes the tactics used are…questionable. When I worked in the business, people would constantly ask how it works and if the news is real. I felt that in this book, I could spill some of the inner machinations of how the cult of celebrity was built.

At the same time, I wanted to mix up the romance formula. I was tired of the same romance plot line, where the innocent assistant falls for the young, dashing billionaire CEO. I took a page from Girls and made my main female character independent, edgy, and honest. She doesn’t have everything figured out, and she’s experiencing the full spectrum of the agony of figuring yourself out in your twenties.

She represents the little bit of bad girl we all have in us. On her own for the first time, unencumbered by her past and who she had to be growing up, Anna wants to discover herself and reinvent herself. She feels free for the first time to rebel and break out of the good girl she had to be growing up. Finally, she feels the freedom to let herself go, go a little wild—and test the boundaries to discover where she fits in in the world and to create her own happily ever after.

The Book

Sweet Muse by Ava Cummings
Genre: Contemporary Fiction / Erotic Romance

About Sweet Muse:
Determined to overcome her difficult past, Anna Starr lands a coveted job at the nation's biggest celebrity magazine in the center of the New York City power scene. She learns early on to make it on her own, and through sheer force of will she does. But frustration sets in when the dark side of tabloid journalism starts to poke through, and she gets duped while dating slicker-than-thou city boys.

Amidst a sea of cocktail parties, Anna meets rising art star Damien Wolfe. Their connection is dangerous, intense, and passionate beyond her imagination. He sees her in a way that she has never seen herself, setting her on a journey toward self-discovery—understanding what it means to be truly loved for the first time in her life. But she may lose it all when her blind ambition and his dark past lead to a crisis that changes everything.

Connor (In The Company Of Snipers, #5)
By: Irish Winters
Pages: 339
Published: November 3, 2014
Publisher: Windy Day Press

About Connor:
Connor Maher is about to find out. As if dogging the brutal Sonoran Cartel through sun-baked Utah isn't tough enough, he's come face to face with his worst nightmare. Diminutive ex-Marine spitfire, Isabella Ramos, has just three words to say to him: I. Hate. You.

Heartache hurts so much worse than gunshot…

How many times can a man say he’s sorry? Like he hasn’t heard that before.

Why was he the one who got to live?

Izza only accepted the Utah operation because he’d be there. It’s time Connor knows the truth, but how can she trust him with her life much less the secret she’s come to share? He's nothing but grief personified behind the guise of an blue-eyed, honorable man. Not until the cold-blooded SC dumps her and Connor in the farthest corner of the relentless Utah desert does she begin to realize….

There are worse things than death…

Teaser
“You want to die right here and now, Boston?” Sergeant Isabella Ramos hissed, her shoulders rolling along with her swagger. How could a gal with such sexy brown eyes be so mean and sound so tough? His eyes refused to move off of her, even though her top lip was curled over a wicked Devil Dog bite.

And here he was holding her. Not just holding her, but chest to breast kind of holding her, and either she didn’t mind the contact or he was in for one helluva lesson in smack down, hand-to-hand combat. The woman was pure muscle, her biceps as hard as her eyes. Contempt glittered there, and just maybe something else. Mischief?

“Ahh, no, sir – I mean—no, ma’am—I mean—” He dropped his hands and took a full step back to get out of her personal space, stuttering like an idiot.

Jamie was still crouched with his hand clamped over his big fat mouth he was laughing so hard. Right then and there, Connor should’ve handed his buddy over, but real men don’t do that either.

Ramos stomped right back under Connor’s chin, her eyes dark and deadly, full of the promise of nothing but pain. Maybe death. “You think hitting another soldier’s ass is funny, do you?”

“No, ma’am, I do not.”

God, she was so damned gorgeous. Yeah, she radiated a certain amount of radioactive hostility, and he was pretty sure he glowed already, but damn. What a package. His nose filled with the lovely whiff of roses and incense. How fitting. The sweetness of flowers mingled with the unmistakable hint of burning ash. He was an alter boy once upon a time. He ought to know.

About Irish Winters:
The wife of one handsome husband and the mother of three perfect sons, Irish divides her time between writing at home and travelling the country with her man while - writing. (Seriously, what else?)

She believes in making every day count for something and follows the wise admonition of her mother to, "Look out the window and see something!"

To learn more about Irish and her books, please visit www.IrishWinters.com.

Irish Winters is an award-winning author who dabbles in poetry, grandchildren, and rarely (as in extremely rarely) the kitchen. More prone to be outdoors than in, she grew up the quintessential tomboy on a farm in rural Wisconsin, spent her teenage years in the Pacific Northwest, but calls the Wasatch Mountains of Northern Utah home. For now.

Top Ten - Random things no one knows about Irish
1. I almost became a nun. Really. Even wrote to the Maryknoll Convent in New York for information as to how to become a novitiate. They turned me down. Told me I need to go out into the world and live first. So I did.
2. I nearly died in February 2011 when I went to the emergency room with AFib. They gave me medicine to slow my heart rate. Funny thing. It stopped it instead. I woke up to a crash cart in my tiny cubicle and the oddest sensation that I’d seen a big black dog in the emergency room. Maybe it was Whisper? I like to think so.
3. I’ve never had writer’s block.
4. I hate it when anyone stands behind me. Why do people do that? It’s not like I have eyes in the back of my head. Can you say cr-e-e-e-e-py?
5. My mother almost named me Joan. It’s on my birth certificate with a line through it. Whew! I like Irish so much better!
6. I walked home from school, 5 miles in rural Wisconsin, when I was just 6 years old. My mother sure was surprised.
7. I love to fish, and yes, I can bait my own hook, thank you very much.
8. I love to drive fast, but I’ve never had a speeding ticket. (Knock on wood.)
9. I believe in ghosts, guardian angels, and the power of the mind.
10. When I go to Washington D. C. or Alexandria, Virginia, I feel like I’m home.

About Megan Bostic:
Hi, I’m Megan (pronounced with a long ‘e’). I am the mother of two crazy beautiful girls, living in the rainy, but lovely Pacific Northwest. I’m the most unorganized person I know, but for me, it works. I have an unhealthy obsession with sock monkeys, love pizza, soccer, the color black, kickboxing and the sun.

As far as my writing goes, I like to write about the hard things in life, stories that make people think and feel— that resonate with them for days. Part of my goal is to live life profoundly, with enough passion and adventure, maybe a little chaos, so that I may become a great writer. I aspire to never stop learning and growing and to continue trying to perfect my craft.

One of my favorite functions as a published writer is to inspire others. I love visiting schools and libraries and motivating aspiring writers to finish their stories and never give up their dreams.

When not writing, I’m trying to get my kids to clean or do homework, watching my older one play soccer, my younger one’s music gigs, listening to sad songs, hanging out with friends, strolling the ocean beaches, or walking the Narrows Bridge.

Aside from writing fiction, I also, though sporadically, dabble in poetry, blog regularly, vlog irregularly, having three video series: Chronicles of an Aspiring Writer, Middle Aged Angst, and currently Creative Chaos all viewable here.

I’m a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, Pacific Northwest Writers Association, the Apocalypsies, and co-president of the Class of 2k12. I am the authr of two young adult novels, Never Eighteen released from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, January 2012, and Dissected, released November 12, 2013 from Sock Puppet Press.

"My heart raced as our lips parted and his tongue danced with mine. My mind was lost in the arms of the man I hoped would now be mine."

Inside the Mind of the Author
My mind… it’s an overactive, jumbled up and scary place to be. I’ll be honest, 99% of the time I don’t live in the real world. Let’s face it, the “real” world is a stressful, violent and sometimes boring place to be. The worlds I live in aren't governed by corruption, greed, envy, etc. They are free, happy and sometimes darn right weird.
My family tells me I wake up a different person every day – they’re probably right. I have about thirty characters talking to me and giving me ideas on what to write. So it’s hardly surprising.
Everyday life bores me for the most part. Moans and groans, people worried about finances, studying, jobs and so on. I do have those thoughts, but I tend to block them out and live with my characters. I prefer to be surrounded by magic and demons, mythical creatures and alternate worlds, rather than “real” everyday issues. I guess that’s just my way of dealing with things.
I’m a very deep thinker. I often space out and know nothing of what’s going on around me. Unless it’s to do with writing, graphic art, history (especially old buildings), photography or the weird and wonderful – I tend not to have an interest in it. I find it extremely difficult to concentrate on anything outside those areas. I much prefer to be creating something from nothing.
I guess I’m anti-social too. I love my friends and family, but I don’t see people all the time. I much prefer my own company (bearing in mind I have characters speaking to me all day every day, so I’m not lonely, lol). Most of my dearest friends live very close by, with exception of the few who live across the sea from me. I speak with them over email, Facebook, Skype, etc. But other than that, I’m a “keep myself to myself” kinda person. I love speaking with people over the internet, but face to face, I get a little anxious. I’m just not a confident person, well, not in the “real” world.

"He stayed close to me for a few more seconds. I let my hand fall so it was now against his chest. I looked him straight in the eyes, getting lost in them for a moment. I could feel his heartbeat, hard and fast. I so desperately wanted to kiss him."

About Lindsay Anne Kendal:
“I have lived in Droylsden, Manchester, all my life. I live with my parents, my younger sister, Cheryl and her little girl Faith.

I never knew what I wanted to do with my life until I began writing. This is my dream. I get most of my inspiration from music, I’ll sit there listening to it and suddenly I’m no longer in the room. My stories play like videos in my mind, then I go and write them down.

I’m a very dark person, I love anything spooky, supernatural, or unexplainable, and so that’s the genre I want to write in for the rest of my life.

I love watching scary films, although I find it very hard to find one these days that actually frighten me.

I also love getting creative with graphics. I've designed over twenty book covers so far. I create promo art and even book trailers.

I have had a love of photography from being a child. I have literally thousands of photographs which I have taken over the years. Now, I have a professional DSLR camera and I'm looking to do photography as well as my graphics as a sideline project.”
