Gueat Post: DEAN CRAWFORD

“APOCALYPSE”
Mankind has feared, and been fascinated by, the end of the world ever since he achieved self-awareness. Our mortality is a constant, and even the farthest reaches of our technological achievements have been unable to shield us entirely from the spectre of annihilation. Of all the species that have lived on planet Earth, 99% are extinct. Of all the dozens of species of hominin to have walked the Earth only ourselves, Homo sapiens, remains. Giant asteroid collisions, super-volcanoes and continental magma fields, dramatic climate change: all have routinely scoured the surface of our planet of all but the hardiest forms of life. Everything changes, and does so with alarming regularity.

Yet despite all of these cataclysmic extinction-level events, our demise, should it occur, will most likely be by our own hand. In “Apocalypse”, the threat to mankind is the wielding of time itself through a futuristic but genuinely feasible technology that would, if it became unstable, consume our entire planet in a fearsome blaze of gravitational fury. Our species is the only one in the history of our planet that is able to change our environment to suit ourselves: we are no longer slaves to natural selection. But that power comes with tremendous responsibility and although so far we have avoided a civilisation-wrecking thermonuclear exchange or a lethal planet-wide pandemic, humanity teeters constantly on the knife-edge of brinkmanship. Our future is in the hands of science, and that science is often wielded by powerful men who have no right to it, but possess the funds to acquire it.

It would be wonderful to be able to see into the future, to find out what will become of our race in a hundred or even a thousand years. The temptation to do so would be almost overwhelming, both in terms of curiosity and also philanthropically – if the future is a disaster for humankind, could we change something in the here and now to prevent that...

Apocalypse by Dean Crawford
Genre: urban fantasy | thriller

About Apocalypse:
A private Learjet filled with scientists travels across the ocean toward Miami. As it passes through the Bermuda Triangle, strange effects disturb the instruments and violent weather envelops the aircraft until it plummets out of control and vanishes without trace.

In Miami, Sheriff Kyle Sears arrives at a murder scene. A woman and her daughter have both been shot through the head. But while Sears is still on the scene he receives a phone call from the woman's husband. With uncanny accuracy, he predicts the immediate future just as it unfolds around Sears, before revealing that he, too, will be murdered within 24 hours. The man gives him the name of someone he must contact. Ethan Warner.

As Ethan Warner and his partner Nicola Lopez race to investigate, they are thrown into the centre of a mind-boggling plot to blow a hole in the space-time continuum.

Review: MASKED BY MOONLIGHT

Masked By Moonlight by Nancy Gideon
Book 1 of the Moonlight series

About Masked By Moonlight:

IN THIS STUNNING FIRST BOOK FROM NANCY GIDEON’S SIZZLING NEW SERIES, A TENACIOUS COP AND HER SHAPE-SHIFTING ENEMY SACRIFICE EVERYTHING FOR FORBIDDEN DESIRE.

ALL SHE WANTS IS REVENGE.

New Orleans homicide detective Charlotte Caissie is dedicated to bringing down the crime boss responsible for her father’s murder. Because her feelings for Max Savoie are . . . complicated.

THEN HE RISKS HIS LIFE TO SAVE HERS.

Rescued from the swamps as a child, Max exists silently in Legere’s shadow, heeding only his voice—until Charlotte Caissie awakens his emotions and tests his loyalties. Stepping outside his cautious rules threatens more than just his heart. He could expose his darkest secret.

NOW THEY’RE BOTH IN OVER THEIR HEADS.

Testing boundaries they weren’t meant to cross means facing the truth about who and what they are—and what they need from each other. If Max is the murderer she seeks, Charlotte could be his next victim. She can’t afford to trust any man. Good thing Max isn’t one.

My Thoughts:
I was actually dreading reading this book... because I said "yes" before reading the synopsis. Then when I did read the synopsis, my first thought was, "Another run-of-the-mill werewolf..." But, I was pleasantly surprised! The story telling quality is so good that it made the reading pace go fast despite my apprehension going into this book. Now I just want to read Book 2 straight away! (Which of course I am reading right now.) You have to give the author a lot of kudos for making me like the book quickly despite my apprehension at the start. However the story felt like it's lacking a more substantial structure. It read like a first chapter of a bigger book... which I suppose it is...

I have a question though for those discriminating readers out there who might have read this book... what does the title got to do with the story? Can somebody explain that to me because for the life of me I cannot see any real connection here... as Max explained to Cee Cee, his shapeshifting is not determined by the moon at all...

Overall this was an enjoyable read for me. Maybe because of the very good story telling quality, I say this is a very good start to a promising series!

Empirical Evaluation:
Story telling quality = 5
Character development = 4.5
Story itself = 4
Ending = 3
World building = 4
Cover art = 4.5
Pace = 4.5

Overall Rating: 4.5 out of 5 cherries

Pure by Julianna Baggott

About Pure:
We know you are here, our brothers and sisters . . .
Pressia barely remembers the Detonations or much about life during the Before. In her sleeping cabinet behind the rubble of an old barbershop where she lives with her grandfather, she thinks about what is lost-how the world went from amusement parks, movie theaters, birthday parties, fathers and mothers . . . to ash and dust, scars, permanent burns, and fused, damaged bodies. And now, at an age when everyone is required to turn themselves over to the militia to either be trained as a soldier or, if they are too damaged and weak, to be used as live targets, Pressia can no longer pretend to be small. Pressia is on the run.

Burn a Pure and Breathe the Ash . . .
There are those who escaped the apocalypse unmarked. Pures. They are tucked safely inside the Dome that protects their healthy, superior bodies. Yet Partridge, whose father is one of the most influential men in the Dome, feels isolated and lonely. Different. He thinks about loss-maybe just because his family is broken; his father is emotionally distant; his brother killed himself; and his mother never made it inside their shelter. Or maybe it's his claustrophobia: his feeling that this Dome has become a swaddling of intensely rigid order. So when a slipped phrase suggests his mother might still be alive, Partridge risks his life to leave the Dome to find her.

When Pressia meets Partridge, their worlds shatter all over again.

Review:
When I started reading this book, it came back to me again, the question I had when I first started reading this series: Why can't they just plug the "barrier" with mortar and concrete? Or a boatload of TNT! Looked effective enough when Kolar blew up that "barrier" section at the lava caves... But then again if they do that, we won't need Paladins to defend our world and then we won't have a story!! That is one logic flaw in the world building which I chose to ignore while reading this series. However, it is starting to nag me now. I like it better if the world building does not have gaping flaws staring right back at me like that. And another thing, it is also starting to read like same old, same old. I love the world of the Paladins, mind, just wish that this book didn't have the feel of "same old, same old" kinda thing. And I sure do like the man-candy on the cover!! The story telling is the same masterpiece quality so the story flowed well and the book read realtively fast. Despite this being Book 8 in the series, there is enough info there so that a reader who is new to the series can keep up and understand the story, fine. So I think this book can be read on it's own, though I do not suggest it because it mentions characters and events from previous books which will spoil the previous books for a reader if planning to read them after this book. Which you will want to read because this author has such a compelling author's voice. The ending is another HEA and am happy. Overall, I enjoyed this book and would give it a 4 out of 5.

Empirical Evaluation:
Story telling quality = 4.5
Character development = 4.5
Story itself = 3
Ending = 4
Cover art = 4
Pace = 4

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 cherries
