Why be the sheep, when you can be the wolf? Seventeen-year-old Ismae escapes from the brutality of an arranged marriage into the sanctuary of the convent of St. Mortain, where the sisters still serve the gods of old. Here she learns that the god of Death Himself has blessed her with dangerous gifts—and a violent destiny. If she chooses to stay at the convent, she will be trained as an assassin and serve as a handmaiden to Death. To claim her new life, she must destroy the lives of others. Ismae's most important assignment takes her straight into the high court of Brittany—where she finds herself woefully under prepared—not only for the deadly games of intrigue and treason, but for the impossible choices she must make. For how can she deliver Death’s vengeance upon a target who, against her will, has stolen her heart?

Review
It's a vibrating tale of a killer novice's adventures during the fifteen century whose abbey raise nuns as her to take care of Britanny's duchy. I found this story gripping and well-written.

The story begins with seventeen-year-old Ismae escapes from the brutality of an arranged marriage into the sanctuary of the convent of St.

The principal character grip us with her sad story and, how studying she gets years later, be settled in the abbey. Early, she receives an assignement and she demonstrates to be a perfect pupil who follows the abess's orders without asking questions. But her nature will split while her assignements increase. The reason will be a man called Duval who will stand in her way, turning the easy things, difficult to her.

I have enjoyed the different characters developped in the book because each and everyone of them do their duty perfectly.

My favourite characters have been Madame Hivern and her son, François, who at the beginning of the story showed some signals of troublemakers (the argument between the family due to the crown, something typical in many books) but, in the end, they give pleasant surprises to the reader.

The story focuses on the future reign of Anne, Duval's sister, in the duchy of Britanny and how the suitors to marry her fight for her and, specially, for the power. Only the interests of the population will be what dominate in the story and they will make us realize the maturity that the future twelve-year-old duchess shows.

One aspect I found a little disappointing was the relationship between Ismae and Duval that finally we can witness, but it is there, in the air.

I would recommend this book because you can find love stories, war, family and political squabbles and theater not being anything what it appears.

My Thoughts:
I've read this author's previous work before but I did not like Strange Angels. However this author has such a compelling author's voice that I decided to give her work another go. Besides another book blogger said that her Lilith Saintcrow persona writes differently from her Lili St. Crow one. So I reasoned to myself that in this work, the things I did not like in Strange Angels might not be there anymore. However, Lilith Saintcrow still has a penchant for stupid heroines. Although this time around it's not so bad. Besides, it was in line with the character's personality make-up. Which made the character just this side of annoying. I would give the character development a 3 out of 5.

The "author's voice" is still good in this book but for some reason it did not feel as good as it was with Strange Angels. Don't get me wrong, it is still compelling, just not as compelling as I remember it to be with Strange Angels. I would give it a 4.5 out of 5.

The cover could use a little bit of lightening up. I know the fantasy noir is high up in the market at the moment but it didn't quite work with this cover art.

The world building is not only very good, it's masterful! Lilith Saintcrow brought the world of the Carcajou wolves come to life very vividly! I'll have to give it a 5 out of 5.

Overall, I did enjoy this book although not as much as I expected, given that Lilith Saintcrow has such a compelling "author's voice". Overall, I'd say that this book is a 4 out of 5.

Empirical Evaluation:
Story Telling Quality = 4.5
World Building = 5
Character Development = 3
Plot = 3
Pace = 4
Story Itself = 4
Ending = 4

The Nymph King by Gena Showalter

My Thoughts:
I've read this book sometime ago so this is a restrospective review. This book is the first and last book I've read of Gena Showalter's work. And the reason I avoided Gena Showalter like the plague ever since. Not all her work is probably this bad but I tend to avoid this author now because of what I have sampled of her writing with this book.

The author has a good "voice". The way she told the story was compelling. But her writing style is annoyingly geered towards titillation at the expense of quality. It reads like a bad B-rated movie. I started to realize that it was bad about one quarters into the book but I persevered in the hopes that something good is going to happen just around the bend... but by the time I came to the last page, that "something good" is nowhere to be seen. On top of that, the plot is weak and is just this side of predictable. A more tolerant reader might find this book enjoyable but this book is so not for me.

Overall Rating: 0.5 out of 5 cherries

I bought this book with my own money. Not only do I want my money back! I want my wasted reading time back!!

Assassin's Honor by Monica Burns

About Assassin's Honor:
Archeologist Emma Zale sees the past when she touches ancient relics. It’s how she uncovered evidence of an ancient order of assassins—the Sicari. Now someone wants her dead, and her only hope of survival is an assassin who’s every bit as dangerous to her body as he is to her heart.

Ares DeLuca comes from an ancient Roman bloodline of telekinetic assassins. A Sicari, he’s honor bound to kill only in the name of justice. But when the woman he loved was murdered, Ares broke the Sicari code and used his sword for revenge. Love cost him dearly once before, and he’s not willing to pay the price again. At least not until hot, sweet, delectable Emma walked into his life. Not only does she hold the key to a valuable Sicari relic, she might just hold the key to his heart.

Assassin's Heart by Monica Burns

About Assassin's Heart:
The truth of the soul.

Lysander Condellaire never understood why he had telepathic and telekinetic powers until the night his Praetorian father tortured him and left him for dead. But his dreams of Ancient Rome hint at a destiny he finds hard to accept, especially when it involves the woman he loves, but can never have.

The consequences of desire.

A gifted healer in the Order, Phaedra DeLuca witnessed her mother’s murder when she was just a little girl. The haunting memory makes her loathe everything Praetorian. Review: BAYOU MOON

Bayou Moon by Ilona Andrews
Book 2 of the Edge series

Genre: urban fantasy romance

About Bayou Moon:
The Edge lies between worlds, on the border between the Broken, where people shop at Walmart and magic is a fairytale–and the Weird, where blueblood aristocrats rule, changelings roam, and the strength of your magic can change your destiny…

Cerise Mar and her unruly clan are cash poor but land rich, claiming a large swathe of the Mire, the Edge swamplands between the state of Louisiana and the Weird. When her parents vanish, her clan’s long-time rivals are suspect number one.

But all is not as it seems. Two nations of the Weird are waging a cold war fought by feint and espionage, and their conflict is about to spill over into the Edge—and Cerise’s life . William, a changeling soldier who left behind the politics of the Weird, has been forced back into service to track down a rival nation’s spymaster.

When William’s and Cerise’s missions lead them to cross paths, sparks fly—but they’ll have to work together if they want to succeed…and survive.

My Thoughts:
Superb story telling quality as per usual with Ilona Andrews. Book is relatively quick to read despite the fact that the book feels thick for a paperback (462 pages). The main female protagonist is a real kick-ass chick with her head screwed on right. No irritating stupidity there. Then I get to revisit some beloved characters which is always a plus. And of course it has a happily-ever-after (HEA) ending. Well, all the books I read usually have HEAs, probably got something to do with how I choose a book ;) ...so we know it's HEA anyway... but, it is how they get there and how the HEA happened that makes a difference... and Ilona Andrews tends to deliver with a flair... I like that!!

What I don't really get though is the title. The "Bayou" bit I could understand seeing that 90% of the story happened in a swamp. A swamp, mind you, which none of the characters ever called a "bayou", by the way. But the "Moon" bit... I could not relate to the story at all... maybe one of you readers could enlighten me... what the flippin' "Moon" in the title got to do with the story??

Story telling quality = 5
Character development = 4.5
Story itself = 4
Ending = 4.5
World building = 5
Cover art = 3.5
Pace = 4

Overall Rating: 4.5 out of 5 cherries

My Review:

A Touch of Greek is the first novel by Tina Folsom that I have had the pleasure of reading, and I must say... I loved this book!

Even though this book is HOT at times, the erotica doesn't take over the romance that Tina writes.  Which, by the way, is simply beautiful.  Sophia and Triton face outward challenges that are both earthly and godly, while at the same time, battling issues within themselves.  The intense situations and emotional trials kept me turning pages at a steady pace.

Unlike some erotic romances that I have read, A Touch of Greek had an interesting and deeply thought out plot.  The story intertwined with the romance was fresh and original, and the characters were easy to relate with.  Yes, even Triton.  Even though he is a God, he has real issues to deal with.

The erotic portions of the book were done with class and taste.  Tina incorporated steamy scenes into her book without taking over the story or making it sound like a porn show.  They were very well written and made the book better, rather than worse.

A Touch of Greek was a very pleasant read.  Tina Folsom's writing flowed well and kept me interested from start to finish.  Not only is the romance beautiful, the erotic moments HOT, and the plot intense, but her writing is so easy to read and flows perfectly.  This is a story that will leave you with a smile on your face and a glow in your heart.  I look forward to reading more of Tina's books, especially others in the "Out of Olympus" series!

My Rating:  4 moons!

Book Review: "Dark Lover" by JR Ward (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #1)

 Author: J. R. Ward

Series: Black Dagger Brotherhood

Book #: 1 of 10

Publisher: Signet

ISBN: 0451216954

ISBN-13: 9780451216953

# pages: 416

Wow! Just.. wow. I don’t quite even know where to start with this one. Holy frickin yowsa! I am now an official member of the BDB addicts. I bow to the master, JR Ward. lol

Dark Lover is intense, moving, emotional, exciting, and every other awesome adjective you could think of. JR weaves a web of tales that entangles each of the characters’ stories with each other, all the while giving them a strong story of their own. Wrath and Beth’s love is absolutely amazing, and I have decided to change my name to Beth in hopes that maybe, just maybe, there is another Wrath out there somewhere. Hey, a girl has to have dreams, right? lol

There were so many times throughout this book that I was literally moved to laugh, smile, or cry. A masterpiece in the paranormal world, Dark Lover should be on everyone’s wish list this Christmas, but be sure to have the funds available to run out and get the next book in the series, Lover Eternal! I had to buy it for my nook before I even finished Dark Lover. lol I had to have the reassurance that I could continue on with my warriors. *swoon*

Seriously, though.. This book is phenomenal. Not many authors can tell that many character stories and weave them together with such fluidity. Every character that I was introduced to had their own story to tell, and each story involved at least one of the other characters. Marissa’s story led to Wrath, Wrath’s story led to Beth, Beth’s story led to Butch, and the brothers were right there beside them through it all. Amazing. Go buy this book.

My Rating: 5/5 !
