Charlie Parker 18: THE DIRTY SOUTH
My Thoughts:
Tried to read this book slowly to savour it. I succeeded, partially... it still went too fast for me.

I have been looking forward to reading this book ever since I finished A Book Of Bones. I wanted to know if Parker pursued Quayle further... and how Quayle fared after he received the mercy of the old gods... or did he die after all? Unfortunately, this thread in the story wasn't even mentioned in this book.

I didn't know that Bill Clinton (the 42nd president of the United States) came from Hope, Arkansas... That little tidbit of information is pertinent to me because it showcases the fact that John Connolly is a master spinner of tales where he weaves fact and fiction so seamlessly that his fiction "feels" so real to the readers. His tales connects to the readers. Kudos to the author!!

When this book was launched I saw that this book was advertised as the "becoming" of Charlie Parker or something similarly crucial. I didn't see that anywhere in the book. If Charlie Parker was ever "made", I think that would be in previous books than this. The Dirty South is a good installment of the Charlie Parker series, but not a pivotal work in the series.

THE BOAT MAN

The Boat Man by Dustin Stevens
Book 1 of the Reed & Billie series
Narrated by Charles Constant
Genre: crime fiction
Format: ebook & audiobookAudiobook

About The Boat Man:
Detective Reed Mattox, just three months removed from the death of his partner, has turned invisibility into an art form. Switching to the K-9, taking over the graveyard shift, moving to a farmhouse miles outside of Columbus, his every move has become predicated on putting as much distance between himself and the outside world as possible.

That distance is shattered though when bodies begin turning up in The Bottoms, the poverty-stricken section of town he is assigned to patrol. Grisly, horrific scenes start to pop up in the middle of the night and the overburdened precinct has no choice but to put Reed on it.

Now operating far outside of his comfort zone with a Belgian Malinois for a partner that attracts attention wherever they go, Reed is forced to unravel the murders, taking him clear across the city and back years in time, to an event that some very influential people will do anything to keep buried...

Billie

My Thoughts:
This book was recommended to me by amazon because I once read Sydney Rye books. However, at that time I did not bite. What I didn't know was that I subscribed to Dustin Stevens' newsletter. I must have entered some giveaway and became a subscriber because I do not remember subscribing to this author particularly. Anyway, I opened the newsletter in my inbox and he was offering the second book in the series for free. Me, being me, OCD and all... I gotta start reading with book 1. So I decided to give this series a try. I was glad that I did because this book turned out to be enjoyable! This is my first Dustin Stevens read and I am quickly becoming a fan. This is also my first Charles Constant listen and also becoming a fan! I like the way he reads. His voice is not aggravating to the ears. And he pauses between scenes to let the listener know that the storyline has changed. All a "plus" to me! And I like Billie! She sounds so adorable to me! What I didn't like was the fact that the entitled, whiny, murderous little shit got away with little more than a scratch!! And no, that's not our antagonist here. It's a minor side character, but still annoying as hell, none-the-less.

Meet The Author

About Dustin Stevens:
I originally hail from the midwest, growing up in the heart of farm country, and still consider it, along with West Tennessee, my co-home. Between the two, I have a firm belief that football is the greatest of all past-times, sweet tea is really the only acceptable beverage for any occasion, there is not an event on earth that either gym shorts or boots can't be worn to, and that Dairy Queen is the best restaurant on the planet. Further, southern accents are a highly likeable feature on most everybody, English bulldogs sit atop the critter hierarchy, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with a Saturday night spent catfishing at the lake.

Since leaving the midwest I've been to college in New England, grad school in the Rockies, and lived in over a dozen different cities ranging from DC to Honolulu along the way. Each and every one of these experiences has shaped who I am at this point, a fact I hope is expressed in my writing. I have developed enormous affinity for locales and people of every size and shape, and even if I never figure out a way to properly convey them on paper, I am very much grateful for their presence in my life.

To sum it up, I asked a very good friend recently how they would describe me for something like this. Their response: "Plagued by realism and trained by experiences/education to be a pessimist, you somehow remain above all else an active dreamer." While I can't say those are the exact words I would choose, I can't say they're wrong. I travel, live in different places, try new foods, meet all kinds of different people, and above all else stay curious to a fault.

Here's hoping it continues to provide us all with some pretty good stories...

Noise as a cow-wolf
My Thoughts:
In this installment, the lines between the good guys and the bad guys gets blurred as our hero tries to save the world. Well, his town really, to be more precise... And my question of what happened to the tree that enabled the dragon to escape got answered. Sort of... Still... Kudos to this book!

Another thing I like about this series is that it has images of scenes and characters in the ebook version. It just makes the story come to 3D life more vividly while my imagination does the rest.

Pace-wise though, it is still not that brilliant. I still find myself needing breaks every now and then. However, it gets better the further I go into the book.

This series is growing on me...

DREAM CASTERS: LIGHT

Dream Casters: Light by Adrienne Woods
Book 1 of the Dream Casters series
Narrated by Vanessa Moyen
Genre: YA urban fantasy
Format: ebook & audiobookAudiobook

About Dream Casters: Light:
Mr. Sandman, send me a dream, ta da da da…..

Seventeen year old Chastity Blake knows the Sandman is just a silly children’s story parents tell their children to get them to sleep. At least she thought it was, until the day a mysterious, light golden sand appeared in her hands during a high school prank that went horribly wrong. A sand that has the power to send anyone it touches into a deep, sound sleep.

Fearing she had lost her mind, Chastity soon discovers the shocking truth of her heritage — she is a Dream Caster. Chastity was never supposed to be raised on the Domain, or what humans call Earth and she is forced to return to her true birth place, Revera — the world of Dreams.

However, in Revera there is no balance between good, the Light Casters, and darkness, the Shadow Casters, and Chastity is caught square in the middle. She soon learns that there is no place for anyone containing both the light and the darkness within them, and the shocking truth that if anyone in Revera ever discovered her shadow self, Chastity would be thrown into the Oblivion — the world of Nightmares.

Dreams are always more than they seem, and this time Chastity is going to discover just how different they can be.

My Thoughts:
This world has magical beings called Dream Casters. They have their own fairyland called Revera and Oblivion, which is apart from the mundane world which they call Domain. If so, don't they also have other magic users? Angels and demons? Vampires and witches, in it? Just wondering...

For some reason, I feel that Chastity, that's our heroine, has this emotional disconnect from events in the story. Like she is acting like she is suppose to respond in the situation but she isn't feeling it... hmmmm, I wonder why that is...

What this story is... Chastity kind of fell into a hole (like the "rabbit hole" in Alice In Wonderland) and ended up in Rivendell. Except they don't call it Rivendell, they call it Dombeya. And then onto Hogwarts. And then "Peter Pan in a The Lost Boys bonfire" got thrown in there too... Huh!? Somebody's been reading too many fantasy/fairytale books... Anyway... it is a typical battle between good versus evil and the good guys won, but... there is book 2, so the bad guys are not down yet. Knocked out but not down, and round two is published already.
