Excerpt:
Prologue

Shaking hands steer the car to the nearest full service gas station. Only one or two gas stations in town still offer full service, but she had done her homework and knew this one did. Not only did full service guarantee that someone else would be pumping her gas, but its expense meant that there’s never a wait. Maneuvering the car to the furthest full service pump, she waits, hands clutching the steering wheel, for the attendant.

After what feels like an eternity to her fevered brain, the attendant finally notices her and saunters over to her car. Her eyes follow him, silently urging him to quicken his pace. Come on, come on. “Fill it up,” she squeaks at him when he finally reaches her car. She grabs her over-large purse and jumps out of the car, nearly tripping in her haste. Looking back, she whispers “I’m sorry” to the oblivious attendant before continuing around the building.

When she reaches the rear of the building, she frantically scans the area. Finally she spots the large garbage container, not in its usual spot. She jogs to it and squats behind it; shrinking into herself and covering her ears. Just in time. A loud bang shakes the earth below her feet. Looking up, she sees flames shooting into the sky.

Time to get out of here. She stands on shaky legs, taking a moment to calm her erratic breath before walking in the opposite direction – refusing to look back.

About D.E. Haggerty:
D.E. Haggerty was born and raised in Wisconsin but thinks she’s a European. After spending her senior year of high school in Germany, she developed a bad case of wanderlust that is yet to be cured. After high school she returned to the U.S. to go to college ending up with a Bachelor’s degree in History at the tender age of 20 while still managing to spend time bouncing back and forth to Europe during her vacations. Unable to find a job after college and still suffering from wanderlust, she joined the U.S. Army as a Military Policewoman for 5 years. While stationed in Heidelberg, Germany, she met her future husband, a flying Dutchman. After being given her freedom from the Army, she went off to law school. She finished law school and moved to the Netherlands with her husband and became a commercial lawyer for more than a decade. During a six month break from the lawyering world, she wrote her first book, Unforeseen Consequences. Although she finished the book, she went back to the law until she could no longer take it and upped stakes and moved to Germany to start a B&B. Three years after starting the B&B, she got the itch and decided to pull the manuscript for Unforeseen Consequences out of the attic and get it published as an e-book. Deciding that she may have indeed finally found what she wanted to do with her life, she went on to write Buried Appearances. After moving to Istanbul, she started on Life Discarded, her third book. Between tennis, running, traveling, singing off tune and reading books like they are going out of style, she writes articles for a local expat magazine and various websites, reviews other indie authors’ books, writes a blog about whatever comes to mind and is working on her fourth book.

Excerpt:
Mary Jane gulped. Placing the strap of her purse firmly over her shoulder, she inhaled a hefty draft of cool air into her lungs. Here goes nothing. Then she walked up the sidewalk, toward the front door of the book shop.

An unseen bell jangled as she opened the door and quickly looked around. The shop was jammed with shelves, but there wasn’t another person in sight. Not even an employee came forward as she stepped inside and strolled cautiously down an aisle. The air welcomed her, though, with the deliciously familiar scent of paper and ink.

Books.

The smell was comfortingly consistent; just like the public library or the Barnes and Noble near her house, and to Mary Jane’s nose, more enticing than freshly baked cookies. She let her fingers trail down a neatly arranged row of novels, the perfectly straight spines smooth to her touch. Passing a display of cookbooks, she turned down another aisle.

Ghosts of New Orleans read the spidery silver script on an oval-shaped purple cardboard sign. She stopped, glancing at the titles. Glossy and unspoiled, the book jackets begged to be picked up and read. She stroked one cover, a black and white photograph of the French Quarter from the 1920s, but she didn’t remove it from the shelf. She read the words Historical Hauntings from another, the bold crimson printing catching her eyes. Then she saw a small black clothbound book, jacketless. Ghost Lover, the ornate embossed gold lettering in the worn cover proclaimed. She reached out her right hand, intending flip through a few pages.

“Excellent taste, young lady,” The voice made Mary Jane jump. She dropped her hand and whirled around.

He was tall and sandy-haired, with hawk-like eyebrows that dominated his almond-shaped brown eyes, tiny crows’ feet fanning out from the corners. Well-shaped lips curled in amusement at her shock. “Did I surprise you?” he asked in a flawlessly articulated English accent, sounding rather like the headmaster of an expensive private school.

“Yes,” Mary Jane answered defensively, her fingers itching as if the impulse to touch the book had burned her.

“Go ahead,” the man urged. “Pick it up, it’s an intriguing story.”

Mary Jane glanced back at the book, small and faded, so nondescript. Yet she had an overwhelming desire to shove it in her purse and run out of the bookshop.

“Books have that effect on people, don’t they? The urge to escape into fiction can be rather overwhelming.” His voice was rich, like a heavy drizzle of caramel, and Mary Jane couldn’t help but look up at him again. He narrowed his eyes even as he smiled, and proffered his hand. “Barrett Stone, at your service.”

“Nice to meet you, Mr. Stone.”

His eyes flickered as he looked her up and down. “No need to be so formal, Mary Jane. You can call me Barrett.”

Oh shit. “Are you…? Are you one of the…?” She let her voice trail into a whisper, to his very visible amusement. “Are you one of the spirits?”

He nodded slowly and with one large hand, he plucked the book from the shelf and handed it to Mary Jane. “Here, this is yours to keep. Now,” he offered her his elbow, “I hope you’ll do me the honor of accompanying me.” It was not a question.

Mary Jane accepted the book and slid it inside her purse before placing her hand on his arm, deceptively strong beneath the elegant tailoring of his suit coat. “Where are we going?” She was almost afraid to ask, but Driver’s words reverberated in her head. Don’t be afraid to be scared.

She hoped his advice was right.

ROUGH AROUND THE EDGES MEETS REFINED Blog Tour & Giveaway

ROUGH AROUND THE EDGES MEETS REFINED Blog Tour & Giveaway

The Book

Rough Around The Edges Meets Refined by Rachael Anderson
Book 2 of the Meet Your Match series
Genre: urban fantasy

About Rough Around The Edges Meets Refined:
For Noah Mackie, life is finally back on track. He has a great support system, a promised promotion is on its way, and he's finally getting the hang of this single father thing. But when the job falls through and his neighbor's matchmaking efforts become more aggressive, Noah is in for yet another unwanted detour. With his career and two spirited daughters to worry about, he doesn't have time for dating—especially not someone like Cassie Ellis, his girls' beautiful and sophisticated dance instructor, who is about as open and approachable as a brick wall.

Rough around the Edges Meets Refined is about two people who think they know exactly what they want but who have no idea what they really need. It's about learning that people aren't always what they seem and that sometimes life’s detours take you exactly where you need to go.

Excerpt:
“So . . .” Becky hedged. “Did you get a chance to meet Cassie when you picked them up?” To most people, the question would have sounded so innocent. But after all of her hints about how Cassie was single, and pretty, and talented, and a wonderful person, and single, Noah knew better.

“I did,” he said, and left it at that. He wasn’t about to tell Becky that her friend was the most standoffish person he’d ever met. Cassie’s expression had been too serene, her posture too perfect, and her sense of humor too nonexistent. She wouldn’t even shake his hand. There was no denying she was beautiful, but if Noah was actually looking—which he wasn’t—it would be for more than a pretty face. He’d want someone who knew how to have fun; someone who could be a wonderful mom to his girls. Cassie didn’t seem to fit that description.

Becky wasn’t about to let it drop. “And . . . ?” she prompted.

“And what?”

She rolled her eyes. “What did you think?”

“Uh . . . she seems nice.” Sort of.

“Nice?” Becky said. “That’s it? Really?”

“We talked for a total of five minutes. And yeah, she was nice.” Sort of.

“Did you think she was pretty?”

“Sure.”

“Intelligent?”

Noah was ready to end the conversation and eat the soup. “Like I said, five minutes.”

Becky frowned. “I can’t believe you only talked to her for five minutes. You should have given it at least fifteen.”

“And let the girls smell up my cab even more? I don’t think so.”

Becky leveled him a hard stare. “Just promise me the next time you’re able to pick them up, you’ll give her a chance.”

He sighed. Becky had done so much for him and the girls, and he would bend over backwards to return all the favors. But this? This made him incredibly uncomfortable. If he was going to meet a girl, he wanted to do it on his own terms and in his own way—not be pushed into something that wouldn’t have a chance of going anywhere but down.

“I don’t know,” he finally said. “She doesn’t really seem like my type.”

“Wow, that’s pretty amazing you could know that after only five minutes,” Becky said.

“Hey, sometimes that’s all it takes.”

“And most of the time, it takes a lot longer.”
