SOPHIE AND THE ODD ONES

Sophie And The Odd Ones by Gwen Demarco
Book 1 in the Sophie Feegle series
Narrated by Janine Granda
Genre: urban fantasy
Format: ebook & audiobookAudiobook

Sophie Feegle needs a break. Rent is due on her crappy apartment and she's halfway through her last loaf of bread.

Sophie doesn't have big ambitions. She only wants a job that will keep her landlord off her back, enough extra cash for whiskey at the neighborhood bar and a bit of free time to hang out with the naughty old lady next door.

When a chance encounter with a quiet stranger leads to a job offer at the San Francisco City Morgue, Sophie jumps at the opportunity. She never expected to find her calling on the graveyard shift surrounded by dead bodies and the strange characters that make up the morgue's staff. Finding out that your friends and co-workers are shifters, ogres and other non-human creatures is a shock, but Sophie quickly realizes that these are her people, and she has finally found her perfect gig.

And then things get odd. Well… odder.

Unusual murders keep ending up on Sophie’s autopsy table, hinting at strange powers working within the city. Something nefarious is building in San Francisco, and it is up to Sophie and her friends to thwart the evil powers on the rise.

My Thoughts:
The first half of the book was pure drudgery. But once you got way past the half-way mark it does pick up. And, it is worth trudging through the first half to get to the meat of the story and the end. The ending while closing the dilemma in the book also pointed to the story of the next book to entice readers to buy the second book in the series and of course it works on me and bought Portents And Oddities. Fingers crossed that it wouldn't be like this book where the first half needs will power to get though.

The cover art could sure use some upgrade! Sprucing up...

This is my first Janine Granda listen and I like the way she reads.

WHISPERS OF THE DEAD

Whispers Of The Dead by Adaline Winters
Book 1 in the Cora Roberts series
Narrated by Nicol Zanzarella
Genre: urban fantasy
Format: ebook & audiobookAudiobook

White Castle is a small town with big secrets. It’s the epicentre of the paranormal community. Expect the wolves to be large and the town’s blood supply to be short.

I’m the local bed and breakfast owner who offers extras such as supernatural autopsies and burials, earning me the title of The Undertaker. A string of murders brings the lord of the shifters and the vampire prince to my door. Together we take on the evil lurking in the shadows. But as we draw closer to the truth, they begin to unpick my secrets, which I must protect with my life. Pity they have the best senses in town.

My name is Cora Roberts, elemental badass with a secret that will rock the world.

My Thoughts:
Reading this book is very strongly reminiscent of the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. However, dark and dangerous Jim is now Dave and Dr. Dolittle is now Norbert. Kate aka Dina aka Cora now have an inn. Gertrude Hunt is now Summer Grove House. Except this time Summer Grove House is not sentient anymore, just warded. The BDH (book-devouring horde) will get what I'm saying here. As if that is not enough, Stefan in the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs is now Sebastian. Same vampire bond. Slightly different characteristics of the bond. So, similarities. Plenty of them. So...?? The more the merrier!! Let them all come!! Tides us over until the next Kate Daniels and/or Mercy Thompson series book(s) comes out! Staves off the post-good-book-read depression!

I like the fact that the plot has a slight twist to it. Urban fantasies are not known for plot twists!

This is my first Nicol Zanzarella audiobook and I am fast becoming a fan!

About Adaline Winters:
Adaline loves to write strong sassy heroines who bring alpha males to their knees. She enjoys sprinkling breadcrumbs that lead to the twists and turns in a book. She has been know to leave a reader on a cliff hanger or two.

She lives with her husband, daughter and bonkers dog, in the not so sunny but scenic, Lake District, England.

When she’s not writing or listening to the characters running rampant in her head, you can find her failing to grow tomatoes or reading anything romance - particularly books with strong heroines who drive alpha males insane.

The Narrator

About Nicol Zanzarella:
Nicol Zanzarella is an award-winning audiobook narrator, with titles spanning multiple genres in both fiction and nonfiction. She came to audiobook narration after (literally) growing up within the walls of a local radio station that her father ran, and brings with her a background in both classical and contemporary theater, as well as film. She also has numerous television and radio commercials to her credit. Originally from Yonkers, New York, she currently lives in California, where, when not in the booth, you can usually find her drinking coffee, cooking her grandmother's Italian recipes, or in the local boxing gym. Thank you for listening!

SAVAGE SAINTS

Savage Saints by K.C. Cross
Book 2 in the Monsters of St. Mark's series
Genre: urban fantasy
Format: ebook

About Savage Saints:
Pell learns to love pants.
Pie learns to love magic.
And Tomas learns to love a woman.

Pie and Pell are like two peas in a pod. Meant for each other, madly in love, and living their best lives as Mr. and Mrs. Monster of Saint Mark’s. Kind of. Pie is dreading her new job working for the tall, dark, and sleek Modern Minotaur. And the irony that just a few weeks ago she was demanding that Pell allow her to get a job to support the sanctuary, isn’t lost. It’s like the gods are playing with her on purpose.

Pell is still his grumpy self but he’s got a new job as well — babysitting a bag of magic rings that seem to have a mind of their own. No matter where he hides them, they will not stay put. Add in a doorway he can suddenly see and a new power he forgot he had, and well… things are getting interesting.

Tomas is a brand-new man. Literally. His new freedoms are just the beginning of his adventure into modern humanity. Not only can he leave the sanctuary, drive a truck, and spend time with the people in Granite Springs — he also learns how to cheat the rules.

Everything has changed for the better. But when Pie discovers the secrets of magic, Pell uncovers the real purpose of the rings, and Tomas falls in love with a Townie… things change again.

Only this time, they’re the ones with all the power.

My Thoughts:
There are a few clerical mistakes which I wished were not there. However, these little mistakes can be ignored for the enjoyable reading time that this book gives me.

Of course this book also ends in a cliffhanger, but, it also ends the current dilemma in the book! Which is awesome!! A lot of urban fantasy books don't do that. They end in whooping cliffhanger like the entire book is just a chapter of a bigger book. Not this one! Of course it still follows the story arc of the series, but , the book also has it's own story in line with that story arc and it closes with the ending of the book. That kind of writing makes me buy that author and follow the series!
